Challenge Sunset will be the only night triathlon in Brazil and around the world
The bi-national Itaipu hydroelectric power plant, located in the city of Foz do Iguaçu, Paraná state, southern Brazil, on the border of Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina, will hold an unique Challenge Family event. It’s called the Challenge Sunset, and will be held at night. Registration will open on March 1st, 2017. The event will take place on the weekend of September 7th, 2017 (Brazil’s Independence day weekend). Because of the holiday, a lot of Brazilians’ athletes are expected. The main event (Half Distance triathlon on Saturday, September 9th) will be the first one starting at the sunset and finishing at the end of the night. And also, at the same day it will hold the Challenge Sprint Distance, starting at 5pm.
There will be a lot of opportunities for the entire family to join and share a great weekend together. The fun will begin on Friday (September 8th): starting at 4pm, it will be Challenge Junior (for kids from 7 to 15 years old); the other race that will take place on the same day at 5:30pm will be the Challenge Women, an exclusive walk/run event for women only; and finally the Challenge For All, a 10k run.
What a Challenge!
Carlos Fernando Menezes is the one responsible to organize the Challenge Family events in Latin America and he explained that Challenge Family originated in Germany in 2003, and, nowadays it occurs in 26 countries in all continents. It has been considered the biggest international triathlon event of the annual calendar. In Brazil, the circuit had its debut in 2014, in the city of Florianopolis, Santa Catarina state.
Since the very first race in Brazil, the cities of Maceió (Alagoas state) and Manaus have also had Challenge Family events. For 2017, besides Foz do Iguaçu night event, there will be races in Brasilia, capital of Brazil (Challenge Cerrado, April 23rd), Maceió (August 20th) e, wrapping up the Brazilian Challenge Family circuit, Florianapolis great weekend events on December 3rd.
Menezes afirms that the main focus of the event is the Family, reaching all ages, many categories and different levels of difficulties. According to him, there are a lot of expectation around the Itaipu Challenge Family weekend events, and it will definitely call everyone’s attention to the entire Challenge Family circuit.
“We’ll launch here a race on the sunset’s system, which will be first one in the world of this type. You will hardly find some other race in another place at night with the same conditions as we have in Itaipu, such as: road safety, lights and visibility”, mentioned the Director of Latin America Challenge.
Menezes also said that it will be distributed U$ 25.000,00 (twenty five Thousand dollars) awards for the first five places on the Challenge Half Distance, both for male and female races. The first six athletes of the each category of the Half Distance will guarantee their spots for the world franchise event, in 2018.
The superintend of Social Communication of Itaipu, Gilmar Piolla, said that the race “is a partnership that we are celebrating and we want to keep alive this binational race for triathlon, that is unique because it is shared among two countries”. Challenge comes with a proposal that adjusts to the best characteristics of Itaipu and also there is a possibility to bring the World Challenge event in 2018 to our location.
This year, the franchise Half Distance world event will take place in Slovakia on June 3rd. There will be distributed € 150.000 (one hundred and fifty Thousand Euros) in awards. Menezes said that he will advocate to have the World Challenge Family Half Distance event in 2018 in Itaipu. “They have excellent conditions: we are located in the triple border of Brazil, Paraguai and Argentina, in a touristic spot”, mentioned.
